  16. NEXTSTEP AND NEXTSTEP DEVELOPER FOR HP'S PA-RISC-BASED
  17. WORKSTATIONS SHIPS

  19. REDWOOD CITY, Calif.-August 17, 1994-NeXT Computer, Inc. and
  20. Hewlett-Packard Company today announced the shipping of NEXTSTEP
  21. and NEXTSTEP Developer Release 3.2 for HP's PA-RISC-based
  22. workstations.  NeXT's object-oriented operating system software is
  23. now shipping for the HP 9000 Model 712, 715, 735 and 755
  24. workstations.  The two companies' have targeted the financial
  25. services and telecommunications markets for the product, and upon
  26. customer request, HP will preload the software on selected
  27. workstations for large enterprises.

  29. One customer benefitting from the NeXT/HP relationship is McCaw
  30. Cellular Communications, which is standardizing on NEXTSTEP for
  31. key customer service applications.  "Having NEXTSTEP for HP
  32. PA-RISC gives us tremendous flexibility in building scalable
  33. object-oriented solutions for our business," said Jonathan Weeks,
  34. technical architect at McCaw Cellular Communications.

  36. "Banks, trading institutions and telecommunications companies are
  37. already using NEXTSTEP and HP hardware to develop and deploy
  38. innovative applications that would be impossible or impractical
  39. given traditional methods," said Bernard Guidon, General Manager,
  40. HP's Workstations Systems Group.  "HP's powerful workstations will
  41. let these applications run even faster, further strengthening our
  42. joint customers ability to increase competitive advantages."

  44. NeXT and HP Deliver Object*Enterprise Products
  45.  
  46. NEXTSTEP for HP's PA-RISC architecture completes the delivery of
  47. desktop to data center solutions being delivered as part of
  48. Object*Enterprise, the relationship NeXT and HP formed in May
  49. 1993.  Object*Enterprise was designed to enable customers to use
  50. NeXT and HP technology to develop and deploy object-oriented
  51. client/server-based applications across the enterprise.

  53. "NeXT and HP are now delivering NEXTSTEP on HP's fast RISC
  54. workstations and servers - right on schedule with the plan we
  55. announced a year ago," said Steven P. Jobs, chairman and CEO of
  56. NeXT Computer, Inc.  "This combination gives our customers a truly
  57. scalable object-oriented architecture today."

  59. NEXTSTEP for HP's PA-RISC workstation products is a complete port
  60. of the NEXTSTEP operating system currently shipping on Intel
  61. processors, including the HP Vectra PCs.  Also shipping is
  62. NEXTSTEP Developer, the complete graphical object-oriented
  63. development environment that enables the rapid development of
  64. client/server applications.  The NEXTSTEP Object Frameworks, the
  65. basis of OpenStep, enable existing NEXTSTEP applications to be
  66. ported to the PA-RISC workstations with no source code changes.

  68. "This release of NEXTSTEP for HP PA-RISC is further evidence  of
  69. NeXT's success in making NEXTSTEP an architecture independent
  70. operating environment," said Jonathan Schwartz, president of
  71. Lighthouse Design.  "With barely a man month's work, we were able
  72. to port our entire product line to HP PA-RISC workstations,
  73. creating yet another market opportunity for our family of eight
  74. productivity applications. NEXTSTEP drastically reduces the
  75. complexity of such ports, increasing the opportunity for its
  76. developers and customers."

  78. For HP servers, NeXT is shipping PDO-Portable Distributed
  79. Objects-for HP-UX.  PDO is the first industry product to provide a
  80. heterogeneous client/server framework based on objects, and
  81. extends the same seamless object model and messaging architecture
  82. as NEXTSTEP's operating environment.  WIth PDO, NEXTSTEP clients
  83. can access objects residing on the HP 900 Series 800 business
  84. servers and Series 700 workstations deployed as servers.

  86. NeXT is also shipping NetInfo for HP-UX servers, which is
  87. compatible with the NetInfo bundled with NEXTSTEP.  Developed by
  88. NeXT and Xedoc, the leading portable NetInfo consulting group,
  89. NetInfo for servers is a flexible and extensible database system
  90. for distributed system and network administration. NeXT's NetInfo
  91. allows centralized management of NEXTSTEP-based environments.
  92. NetInfo provides management capabilities that interoperate within
  93. HP OpenView network and system management environment.
