NEXTSTEP AND NEXTSTEP DEVELOPER FOR HP'S PA-RISC-BASED
WORKSTATIONS SHIPS
REDWOOD CITY, Calif.-August 17, 1994-NeXT Computer, Inc. and
Hewlett-Packard Company today announced the shipping of NEXTSTEP
and NEXTSTEP Developer Release 3.2 for HP's PA-RISC-based
workstations. NeXT's object-oriented operating system software is
now shipping for the HP 9000 Model 712, 715, 735 and 755
workstations. The two companies' have targeted the financial
services and telecommunications markets for the product, and upon
customer request, HP will preload the software on selected
workstations for large enterprises.
One customer benefitting from the NeXT/HP relationship is McCaw
Cellular Communications, which is standardizing on NEXTSTEP for
key customer service applications. "Having NEXTSTEP for HP
PA-RISC gives us tremendous flexibility in building scalable
object-oriented solutions for our business," said Jonathan Weeks,
technical architect at McCaw Cellular Communications.
"Banks, trading institutions and telecommunications companies are
already using NEXTSTEP and HP hardware to develop and deploy
innovative applications that would be impossible or impractical
given traditional methods," said Bernard Guidon, General Manager,
HP's Workstations Systems Group. "HP's powerful workstations will
let these applications run even faster, further strengthening our
joint customers ability to increase competitive advantages."
NeXT and HP Deliver Object*Enterprise Products
NEXTSTEP for HP's PA-RISC architecture completes the delivery of
desktop to data center solutions being delivered as part of
Object*Enterprise, the relationship NeXT and HP formed in May
1993. Object*Enterprise was designed to enable customers to use
NeXT and HP technology to develop and deploy object-oriented
client/server-based applications across the enterprise.
"NeXT and HP are now delivering NEXTSTEP on HP's fast RISC
workstations and servers - right on schedule with the plan we
announced a year ago," said Steven P. Jobs, chairman and CEO of
NeXT Computer, Inc. "This combination gives our customers a truly
scalable object-oriented architecture today."
NEXTSTEP for HP's PA-RISC workstation products is a complete port
of the NEXTSTEP operating system currently shipping on Intel
processors, including the HP Vectra PCs. Also shipping is
NEXTSTEP Developer, the complete graphical object-oriented
development environment that enables the rapid development of
client/server applications. The NEXTSTEP Object Frameworks, the
basis of OpenStep, enable existing NEXTSTEP applications to be
ported to the PA-RISC workstations with no source code changes.
"This release of NEXTSTEP for HP PA-RISC is further evidence of
NeXT's success in making NEXTSTEP an architecture independent
operating environment," said Jonathan Schwartz, president of
Lighthouse Design. "With barely a man month's work, we were able
to port our entire product line to HP PA-RISC workstations,
creating yet another market opportunity for our family of eight
productivity applications. NEXTSTEP drastically reduces the
complexity of such ports, increasing the opportunity for its
developers and customers."
For HP servers, NeXT is shipping PDO-Portable Distributed
Objects-for HP-UX. PDO is the first industry product to provide a
heterogeneous client/server framework based on objects, and
extends the same seamless object model and messaging architecture
as NEXTSTEP's operating environment. WIth PDO, NEXTSTEP clients
can access objects residing on the HP 900 Series 800 business
servers and Series 700 workstations deployed as servers.
NeXT is also shipping NetInfo for HP-UX servers, which is
compatible with the NetInfo bundled with NEXTSTEP. Developed by
NeXT and Xedoc, the leading portable NetInfo consulting group,
NetInfo for servers is a flexible and extensible database system
for distributed system and network administration. NeXT's NetInfo
allows centralized management of NEXTSTEP-based environments.
NetInfo provides management capabilities that interoperate within
HP OpenView network and system management environment.
HP 9000 Workstations and Servers
HP 9000 workstations and servers have consistently led the
industry in performance for both technical and business-computing
standard benchmarks. These high-speed systems are well suited for
business-critical business modeling and simulation programs,
market data dissemination, decision support suites and management
products. The Series 700 workstations provide the power needed in
a rapid application-development environment. The Series 800
services provide a secure computing environment for large database
operations and serve as gateways to global multi-vendor networks.
